Two New Note Cards (Rocky Mountain News and Columbine Flower)

March 11th, 2010 by Neil Corman

Two new offerings are available as note cards from Neil Corman Photography.  Both of these 5×7 cards are printed on an art linen paper and blank inside so you may add your own message.  Whether you use the cards as a thank you note, a special occasion or anything else it will indeed be something special for the individual receiving the card.

Rocky Mountain News – Goodbye, Colorado

On Friday February 27, 2009 the Rocky Mountain News published their final edition. The News has been a part of Denver for almost as long as Denver was a city and this final edition marked the end of an era.  While the newspaper industry has been down the past few years, in the year since the final edition, this has been the most popular image sold at gallery nrc.  To help people remember the newspaper, it is now possible to the image as a note card.

Columbine Along the Trail

The columbine is the State Flower of Colorado, and in the early summer months they come out in full force in the mountains.  Due to the fragile status of this rare flower it is protected by state law on public and private lands.  While hiking as part of Team in Training in the summer of 2009, I found this columbine right along the trail in almost perfect form.  The fact that one petal is a little off drew me to capture this photograph.

Along the Journey (January 2009)

March 10th, 2010 by Neil Corman

While a little late, the top images for the month of January have been picked from the daily posts and are now a part of the Along the Journey… gallery.

You may recall, Along the Journey… is a collection of images taken with an iPhone during the normal course of the day.  Inspired from the work of Chase Jarvis and others it is a creative outlet to explore new ideas while using a mobile phone.  Editing of the photos is done “in camera” with an iPhone application keeping to the goal of creativity and composition.

Gate at Denver Art Museum

I had walked past the Denver Art Museum many times, however this was the first time I noticed this gate on the older building which makes up the museum.  With the strong colors of the gate, I wanted to keep those the main part of the image in addition to keeping it known that it was indeed a gate.

Fence Post Along Tennyson

Walking along Tennyson Street in the Berkeley District of Denver, I noticed a few properties which had fence posts and chains on them.  This one had the added element of grass near it which caught my eye on a cold January day.

Pipes on a Building

I was taking out the garbage at gallery nrc, and noticed the pipes on the back of the building and how they were mirroring the plant growth.  With the combining of the two, I used the morning light to grab an image to bring both aspects into the frame.

Check back next week for the February 2010 Along the Journey images.

Rocky Mountain News – One Year Later

February 27th, 2010 by Neil Corman

It has been one year since the final Rocky Mountain News was published.  The following image was taken the morning of the final edition of the News.

Since I first had this image at Denver Photography Gallery – gallery nrc, it has quickly become the top seller due to the emotion and connection to the image and newspaper.  You may also find the Final Edition image on the Images from Neil Corman Photography website.

Now that Denver is a one newspaper town, have you noticed any changes in print news?

Along the Journey… (December 2009)

January 10th, 2010 by Neil Corman

The images for the month of December have been picked from the daily posts and are now a part of the Along the Journey… gallery.

Along the Journey… is a collection of images taken with an iPhone during the normal course of the day.  Inspired from the work of Chase Jarvis and others it is a creative outlet to explore new ideas while using a mobile phone.  Editing of the photos is done “in camera” with an iPhone application keeping to the goal of creativity and composition.

Telephone Poles in the Snow

Telephone Poles in Snow

This image was taken while on Amtrak in October 2009, but was posted as a daily picture in December.  Photographing while traveling in a train was quite a challenge.  The key is to be aware of the lag time in your camera as well as what is approaching.  Seeing what is approaching may not be always the same as what is in front of you, but that adds to the challenge.

Railing in the Snow

Railing in the Snow

December brought some snow to Denver early in the month.  With the warmer pavement the snow melted quickly, allowing for the contrast of white and dark to stand out especially when adjusting the contrast levels.

Colma BART Station

Colma BART Station

Using what was learned from the Amtrak trip in October, I applied this to a trip to the Bay Area.  Taking BART from the San Francisco airport, I explored some of the same techniques and the sense of motion.

Suitcase

Suitcase

At the airport everyone is waiting in line.  While getting breakfast, this suitcase stood in front of me in line (yes the owner was next to it).  Grabbing a picture of the suitcase on it’s own took a creative angle on my side.  But the goal of getting the suitcase in an open space was achieved.

Walking through the Airport

Walking through the Airport

At the airport, everyone is in a state of movement.  While waiting for a flight at the end of November, I noticed that and from my chair tried to grab some of these images.  This idea of people of movement at the airport was inspired by a series of work done by Missoula photographer Bob McGowan.

Be sure to visit the Along the Journey… gallery to see work from prior months.

Image Picks from 2009

January 9th, 2010 by Neil Corman

With the first full week of 2010 coming to an end, I figured it was time to pick some images from 2009 which summarized the year.  Instead of picking the top images, I picked five images taken in 2009 along with how they changed my style or approach when photographing.

Winter in Washington Park

Winter in Washington Park - Denver, Colorado

On the first weekend of January 2009, some snowfall finally graced Denver.  Not knowing how much would fall, I planned to wake up early on Sunday morning to see the result and photograph around Denver.  When heading out that morning, in my mind I was thinking of the tree at Washington Park I had photographed on a May 1, 2008 (Snowy May Day).  Arriving before sunrise at the park, I took the similar photograph, but then decided to explore the subject some more with different angles in addition to what should be included in the frame.  The end result is the above image which now includes the boat house at the park.  While I went into the location with an idea of the subject, exploring new perspectives and challenging yourself in the field is important.  This approach was something I had always done in the field, but on this day it just hit home with the result.

Rocky Mountain News – Final Edition

Rocky Mountain News - Final Edition

On Friday February 27, 2009 the Rocky Mountain News published their final edition. The News had been a part of Denver for almost as long as Denver was a city and this final edition marked the end of an era. The final edition which I purchased was placed on the front porch to my house as this is how many people received the paper.  The idea for this image came to mind when I was walking back from the local convenience store where I purchased a few copies of the paper.  There were two reminders which came with this photograph.  The first is to think about how people see the subject you are photographing.  In the instance of the newspaper a front porch is where you would expect the paper to land and become a part of your day.  Sure there are the days it is in the grass, bushes or elsewhere but that isn’t a positive outlook of picking up the newspaper.  The second is to be aware of what is happening around you as you never know when a good photo opportunity may present itself.

Coors Field Seats

Coors Field Seats

While at a Colorado Rockies game this fall with a large group, just before the game I noticed the sun starting to drop behind the stands on the 3rd base side of the stadium.  As this late afternoon light streamed through, the beverage holders near our seats started to pick up the light.  Pausing from a conversation witha  few others, I grabbed my iPhone and took the above image.  This image shows the importance of having a camera with you at all times even if it is a mobile phone, and is the basis of the Along the Journey… series.

East of Denver International Airport

East of Denver International Airport

During the month of November, I once again did the Thirty Days project.  Near the end of the month, I flew back to Denver from a Thanksgiving trip in Southern California.  Knowing that the my flight would land after midnight I thought about heading out to photograph at that time, depending on the weather.  Upon arriving at my car close to 2am, I thought about it and took a drive east of the airport to photograph.  I knew it would be cold, so I prepared myself as best I could in the conditions.  After spending about 45 minutes on the plains I headed home tired, but more so happy I pushed myself to use that opportunity to photograph.  It is easy to stay somewhere warm, but the images can not be created without pushing yourself.  In this instance I found my Day 30 image, but also have ideas to look into later this year.

Hannah’s Birthday at Disneyland

Hannah at Disneyland

My niece turned five in 2009.  For her birthday, she was treated with a trip to Disneyland to see the princesses and fairies.  I decided to fly out for the occasion and join my sister’s family, as well as my parents who made the trip to Anaheim.  Of course there was no way I would not head there without a camera and during the day I took many images of Hannah enjoying herself at the park.  Capturing the moment is important but so is taking time out to enjoy the important moments in life as they will quickly pass.

There were many other pictures taken during the course of 2009, but I feel the above five highlight the year and serve as a reminder of why I photograph.

East of Denver International Airport – Day 30

November 30th, 2009 by Neil Corman

The holiday weekend ended, but my flight back to Colorado from San Diego was not scheduled to arrive close to 1am.  With this in mind I tried to maximize my sleep on the flight and decided if the conditions were good enough head east of the airport for the final photograph of Thirty Days 2009 on the way home.

With a near full moon I made way out and used some roads I was familiar with to grab some images at around 2am.  The quiet night with a slight chill in the air and mostly calm wind helped, but after about 30 minutes the chill and late hour steered me home. I was able to captured some images using around a 20 second exposure showing the quiet night.

Hannah – Day 29

November 29th, 2009 by Neil Corman

With the end of the Thanksgiving weekend today, my five year old niece took the opportunity to play in my parents backyard this morning before heading home with my sister and brother-in-law.  She was being crafty in the backyard and spent some time drawing with the chalk in addition to performing one more song for all of us.  As she was drawing I noticed her shadow being cast and took the opportunity to take the following image of Hannah leaving some chalk on the pavement as her earlier creations of the weekend had been washed away by the prior day’s rain.

Mission Beach – Day 28

November 28th, 2009 by Neil Corman

The weather turned a little over night and the morning was filled with some rain and more so wind along the San Diego coast.  After photographing in La Jolla I headed down to Mission Beach and found a street light along the boardwalk which was still on even though the sun had been up for about an hour.  With the overcast conditions, it was a different type of photography today and took advantage of this to capture the following image.

Lake Murray – Day 27

November 27th, 2009 by Neil Corman

A trip to nearby Lake Murray was in order on the morning after Thanksgiving to feed the ducks.  The weather up until now was quite warm, but a front was suppose to move through the San Diego area later in the day bringing cooler weather.  While at Lake Murray, a line of cirrus clouds were visible as a precursor to the cold front.  After feeding the ducks at the lake, we headed as a group along the trail towards the dam (Lake Murray is the last holding location for San Diego drinking water).  In the distance was Cowles Mountain and with the clouds for that front moving in a wide angle shot was used to emphasize the sky over the lake.  Now the question comes, what will the weather be the rest of the weekend.

San Diego from Coronado – Day 26

November 26th, 2009 by Neil Corman

I found myself always heading to Coronado on Thanksgiving morning since going out to photograph while in San Diego, and this year was not different at all.  In the past I have photographed at the Ferry Landing and the Hotel Del Coronado, so this year I tried something a little different.  Using the beach location near the San Diego-Coronado bridge I found some morning light in the direction of the bridge, but also a different view of the San Diego skyline for the Day 26 image of Thirty Days.  Now time for plenty of food.
