Lakeside Amusement Park gets an interesting response whenever it is mentioned, good and bad.  It can range from I grew up at that park going there all the time, to is that the one with the sketchy looking roller coaster.  Last summer I was photographing from the outside of the park when I found a vantage point near the train tracks.  Hearing the train whistle in the distance as it made it’s way around Lake Rhoda I was able to frame the image as it continued on the way around the lake back towards the park.

Recent Work

One of the more popular shots of the Denver skyline is from City Park east of the downtown area.  Last week I headed out after a day with rain to capture the scene in spring with some fresh snow in the mountains, however the fog settled in that morning.  This still made for something interesting conditions and I wasn’t the only person out there.  Since this is a popular spot for images I decided to use the other photographer to show this in the image for today.

A couple of months ago I showed an image on Getaway Monday from Salt Lake City which was part of a road trip from Sacramento to Denver.  A few days earlier when we were leaving Lassen Volcanic National Park driving towards Reno, I got the camera out and started photographing along CA-36 which took us to Susanville before heading south to Reno.

As I was looking in the catalog for an image today, once I spotted this image I was reminder of the work currently at gallery nrc and thought this was a great selection for this week.  It was late October so you can see a little color in some of the trees.

I was a passenger in the car while doing this, and don’t recommend driving and taking pictures at the same time.

• Studios open up for the RiNo Open Studio Tour on Sunday.
• Colorado Beer Week starts on Sunday.

The weather may be nice today, however not that long ago you could see this scene in Denver.  This image was taken in January 2009 during a morning snowfall which dropped more snow than expected in the metro area.  However for this cyclist it was a normal commute to work, and one which probably took less time then going by car this morning.

Recent Work

This past weekend was the yearly “Supermoon”, which caused some buzz around the world.  In Denver it appeared the cloud cover would obscur the moon however I still took the chance and headed out east to the plains.  Finding a location which would allow the moon to rise near the airport I set up for moonrise.  I wasn’t sure if I would see the moon, but the moon started to rise over the middle of the airport terminal from my location as the wind started to pickup from an approaching storm.  A few minutes later I grabbed the moonrise image and headed back to the car to explore the area prior to heading back to the city amidst a light show, followed by heavy rain and hail.

The Getaway Monday image for this week gets us on an airplane out to San Diego.  With a cool rainy day ahead it would be nice to head to some warmer weather.  This image was taken in summer 2010 as an aircraft approaches Lindbergh Field passing over Interstate 5 with the San Diego skyline in the background.  Located just minutes from the city it makes it for a quick trip to the downtown area, but also becomes problematic to grow the airport as well.

• The Cinco de Mayo Festival and Parade take over Civic Center Park for this annual tradition through Sunday night.
• Amusement parks open this weekend as Lakeside and Elitch Gardens kick off the fun of summer.  For a few weeks it is weekends only at these parks.
• Free Day on Saturday at Denver Art Museum and Colorado Railroad Museum while on Sunday the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, and Boulder History Museum are free.
• The first Horseshoe Market of the year kicks off today at 46th and Tennyson.  Gates open at 9:00 AM.
• The Colorado Rockies continue a home series as well this weekend against the Atlanta Braves this weekend.

What do you have planned for the weekend?

MODesTEA will be showing the “Tennyson Streetscape” photography which I photographed last summer. The images will be on the walls during the month of May, but also as the street celebrates the outdoor art ribbon cutting and the completion of the project on Friday May 4th. Some of the pieces come with a piece of history which are the original track spikes and soil.

MODesTEA is located on 43rd Street just steps west of Tennyson Street in the Berkeley District of Northwest Denver.

• The Lego KidsFest is this weekend at the Colorado Convention Center.  There are limited tickets left for Sunday afternoon, so if you have a kid who loves legos (like I did) be sure to check this out.
• The History Colorado Center opens today.  If you can’t make it to the opening day, be sure to add this to your list of places to check out soon.  The museum is located at Broadway and 13th.
• The Rock Garden Society Show and Sale takes places today at the Botanic Gardens.  Regular admission is required.
• Totally Tennyson comes back for the second year along Tennyson Street in the Berkeley District of northwest Denver this evening.  This “pub crawl” also raises money for schools in the area.
• The Root 40 music festival concludes this evening at the Fillmore.
• Sunday is a free day at Denver Art Museum.
• The Cherry Creek Sneak fills the streets on Sunday morning around Cherry Creek Shopping Center with a new 10 mile run, 5 mile, and 5k option.  If you are traveling in that area Sunday morning be aware of street closures.
• Worldwide pinhole camera day is Sunday.  CPAC will be holding a class at the Zang mansion for this event.
