The Salton Sea located in Southern California sits over 200 feet below sea level. Due to the proximity to Los Angeles, the sea was once a popular vacation spot prior to the sea becoming polluted and the salinity of the water increasing to very high levels. While efforts are being made to clean up the sea, this area on the northeast corner is now marked with businesses which were once thriving. In November 2007, this sunrise was captured over the old hotel. The hotel was torn down in late 2008.
